Animal Ghosts and Apparitions: ponder ghosts as you haven't before. Author and occult expert Dr. Paul Koudounaris narrates the history of animal hauntings, presenting a slideshow based around fully documented cases. Phantom animals have been known throughout history, and deserve to be as much a part of ghost lore as their human counterparts. Some search for their masters, like Rudolph Valentino's dog Kabar, appearances of whom are still claimed. Others appear out of nowhere to do good deeds, like the ghostly dog that appeared in a New Mexico train station to prevent an impending accident. Others seem intent on wrecking havoc, like a phantom cat that once terrorized an Irish estate, or a reportedly demonic cat that threatened a Pennsylvania town. Still others are touching stories, as apparitions of animals might return to say goodbye, while some are just bizarre, like the ghostly talking mongoose that was once famous on the Isle of Man.
Paul Koudounaris has a PhD in Art History from UCLA. He is known for a series of three books on the visual culture of death, Empire of Death, Heavenly Bodies, and Memento Mori, as well as a history of domestic felines, A Cat's Tale, co-written by his cat Baba, and named a Barnes and Noble Book of the Year in 2020. His history of pet cemeteries and animal burials, Faithful Unto Death, was published this year.
