Description
Hyenas are the largest members of the family Hyaenidae, which includes four species of hyena found across Africa and Asia. The spotted hyena is the most common and widespread species, and is found across sub-Saharan Africa. Predominantly scavengers, hyenas are also active predators that kill their own prey. They are capable of taking down large animals such as wildebeest, zebra and antelope, and they also eat a significant amount of carrion (dead animals). Hyenas are highly social animals, living in large groups known as 'clans'. Clans can comprise up to 80 individuals, and are led by a dominant female. All members of the clan cooperate in raising the young, with babysitting duties being shared between the females.
