Description
The Dumbo octopus is named after a beloved famous elephant, due to its large ear-like fins that resemble the character's ears. These fins, called "paralarvae," are used for swimming and steering. They are also used for capturing prey by creating a current that pulls food towards the octopus's beak. Dumbo octopuses are deep-sea creatures that live at depths of up to 13,000 feet (4,000 meters) in the ocean. They can be found in every ocean basin and are considered one of the most widespread octopus species. Despite living in the deep ocean, they are not well-studied due to the challenges of studying deep-sea creatures. Unlike other octopus species, Dumbo octopuses lack ink sacs for defense. Instead, they use their speed and agility to escape predators. Additionally, they have a unique strategy for avoiding predators called "passive buoyancy." This means that they can control their body density to float motionlessly in the water, mimicking a piece of debris and avoiding detection. Measures 7.1" x 10.6"
